MEET MASTER PENG YOU
Peng You started his Taiji training as a teenager in Dalian, China. From 1981 to 1985, he studied at the Physical Education Department of Beijing Normal University where he received his Bachelor Degree in 1985 and his Master Degree in 1989. During his university years, Master Peng was trained by martial arts masters and professors, most notably, Master Wang Jianhua.
In 1990, Master Peng You immigrated to Canada settling in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He began instructing Taiji soon thereafter at the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre. As Taiji grew in popularity, the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Tai Chi Club was formed and in 1998, the Peng You Taiji Quan Association was incorporated with Master Peng as President of the Association. Master Peng and the Association have worked hard over the years to build a “Health, Happiness and Friendship” life style in our community. Every year since 1998, he led tour groups to China, the center of Asian culture and the motherland of Taiji.
Peng won the 2001 Gold Medal for Taijiquan at the Canadian Wushu Championships and was Grand Champion at the 2003 Thunder Bay Martial Arts Open. He attended the World Taiji Forum at South China Normal University, Guangzhou, December 2003 as a representative of Canadian Taiji. He was awarded the 7th Duan by the Chinese Wushu Association in Zhengzhou, China and was accepted as a disciple by Grand Master Chen Zhenglei, 11th generation Master of the Chen Family Taijiquan in August of 2007.
Master Peng currently holds the following offices:
- President of the Peng You Taiji Quan Association;
- President of the Thunder Bay Martial Arts Council; and,
- Chairman of the Canadian Organization of Traditional Taiji Quan Assocations.
Master Peng has many contacts with famous Taiji Masters and has invited them to share their knowledge in Thunder Bay.
For a number of years, Master Peng has conducted workshops at the Shaolin Temple in Mexico, being invited to do so by his student Shifu Daniel Corona.
